Damask Rose

Damask rose is a shrub that grows 2.2 meters (7 ft., 3 in.) tall, and it’s one of the oldest rose groups. This was believed to be brought from the Middle East by the Crusaders.  It can be found in countries like Turkey, Pakistan, Syria, Bulgaria, Iran, China, Uzbekistan, and India.  Its color varies from light to moderate pink to light red. It has densely-armed stems with stout curved prickles, and stiff bristles. The Damask rose has pinnate leaves, 5 leaflets (rarely 7), and its bush has an informal shape. It’s known to produce fine fragrance, which makes it a suitable ingredient for perfume making.  The leaves of the Damask Rose are also edible and used for flavoring, garnishing, brewing herbal tea, and preserved in sugar like “gulkand” – a rose petal sweet-preserve popular in Southeast Asia.

Historical Use of Damask Rose

Native Americans used Damask rose to treat various ailments such as the common cold, fever, influenza, minor skin burns, cataract, sore throat, and stomach upset.  It was also used for chest and abdominal pain relief, excessive menstrual bleeding, strengthening the heart muscles, reduce depression, anxiety and stress. The British made syrup from the rose’s extract during World War II. It was used to boost the immune system and help prevent certain diseases in children.
